1. Trevor Bell, SP, Class AAA, Salt Lake Bees
Last Start: 9ip, 5h, 0er, 2bb, 5k
Season: 1.96era, 114.2ip, 83h, 30bb, 77k, .200baa
What’s up: Just another standard outing for Trevor. He has been making it look pretty easy since his call up to the Bees. His previous two outings were good but not great and there was some question as to whether he had come back to earth a bit but this latest performance is puts him one step closer to joining the big club. According to Angelswin.com AAA correspondent Kevin Mark, Trevor has excellent command of three pitches all of which he can use to get a batter out. His fastball sits around 91-92mph but he can crank it up to 95mph when needed. All this is coming at a very good time because it seems that the Halos may need him sooner than later.
2. Terry Evans, RF, Class AAA, Salt Lake Bees
Last 7 games: 10-28 (.357avg), 2 doubles, RBI
Season: .287avg, 17hr, 60rbi, 20sb, .853ops
What’s up: Terry has been a bit of a forgotten man this season yet he continues to put up solid numbers with a good power/speed combination. He’s a solid OFer with a strong arm as well. Although at 27yo his prospect status is waning a bit, he could end up a solid 4th OFer for the Halos or perhaps a starter for another team with more space for an opportunity. He was also a recent participant in the AAA home run derby where he made it to the second round.
3. Hank Conger, C, Class AA, Arkansas Travelers
Last 10 games: 16-44 (.364avg), 1 double, 2 triples, 2hr, 12rbi, 5bb/6k
Season: .298avg, 7hr, 44rbi, .778ops
What’s up: Hank has been plodding along this season with pretty mediocre numbers and many have been waiting for him to find his groove. The average had been pretty decent, but the power numbers were off relative to what was expected and now it seems he’s gotten back on track. Perhaps it took a while for him to fully heal from last years injury. I think the second half of the season will be important for Hank both offensively and defensively as a determination of where he ends up starting the season next year.
4. Mark Trumbo , 1b, Class AA, Arkansas Travelers
Last 10 games: 13-39 (.333avg), 4 doubles, 1hr, 9rbi
Season: .274avg, 8hr, 48rbi, .747ops
What’s up: It’s probably no mystery that Mark and his teammate Hank are both heating up around the same time considering that they are one after the other in the Travs order. Trumbo started out slow and as the average has come around, so has his power. Still regarded as one of the best power hitting prospects in the organization, a strong second half from Mark will help us to remember his last year at Rancho as opposed to the first half of this season.
5. Michael Kohn, RP, Class High A, Rancho Cucamonga
Last 5 games: 6ip, 2h, 0er, 3bb, 8k
Season: 5-1, 1.88era, 43ip, 22h, 15bb, 68k
What’s up: Michael’s numbers are almost ridiculous. He got called up to Rancho five games ago and has picked up where he left on in Cedar. For his short minor league career so far, he is averaging 15.2so/9ip, and 4.5h/9ip. Although it’s typical for most players to rise at one level or so per year in the halos system, we might see this kid in Anaheim in late 2010.
6. Alexia Amarista, 2b, Class, A, Cedar Rapids
Last 10 games: 12-31 (.387avg), 1double, 1 triple, 1hr, 2rbi, 7bb, 2k
Season: .305avg, 20 doubles, 6 triples, 1hr, 24rbi, 37bb, 27k, 27sb, .806ops
What’s up: Alexia hit a rough patch earlier in the season and his average dropped below the .300 mark for the first time in awhile but he is back on track walking a ton and hitting with extra base power. My guess is that he doesn’t dip below where he is now for the rest of the season.
7. Andrew Taylor, RP, Class, A, Cedar Rapids
Last 10 games: 11.1ip, 1er, 7h, 5bb, 16k
Season: 2.63era, 37.2ip, 24h, 22bb, 59k
What’s up: Not to be overshadowed by his former teammate in Kohn, Andrew is sporting some pretty gaudy numbers himself. Although his call up to Rancho did not go as planned, he was able to come back to CR and right the ship immediately. He may be another guy that helps the halos pen reload and return to dominance for many years to come.
8. Alexander Torres, SP, Class High A, Rancho Cucamonga
Last 3 starts: 19ip, 2.37era, 16h, 8bb, 23k
Season: 7-3, 2.92era, 101.2ip, 81h, 54bb, 107k
What’s up: What Alex has been able to do at the launching pad in Rancho this season (1.87era) has been quite remarkable and a testament to his status as a true top prospect within the halos system. At over a strikeout per inning and only giving up 4hrs the entire season, the 21yo lefty may find himself a teammate of Trevor Reckling in AA before too long.
9. Jean Segura, 2b, Class Rookie, Orem Owlz
Season at Orem: .388avg, 2 dbl, 3 triples, 3 hrs, 12rbi, 6bb, 6k, 5sb, 1.037ops
What’s up: Could the Halos organization make it two years in a row to have a player hit .400? It’s still early, but by all accounts, Jean has a very good chance. Not exactly a punch and judy guy, he has 8 xbhs in his first 80abs. I can’t believe the halos are cultivating another strong middle infielder. The guys above him better watch out though, because if they are not careful, he could fly right by them on the depth chart.
10. Fabio Martinez Mesa, SP, Class Rookie, AZL
Season: 2-0, 1.96era, 23ip, 12h, 16bb, 36k (4 starts)
What’s up: The 18 year old righty out of the Dominican dominated on his home turf last year (76.1ip, 1.53era, 55h, 93k) and has picked up where he left off in the AZL. Typically a hitting dominant league, Fabio has put up very good numbers. Although it seems his control may need some work, he is yet to give up a long ball and is still striking guys out at a frenetic pace.
